Saren’s Rest is a lively place at the best of times and it’s downright chaotic most of the rest. The whole place has a grimy, frontier feel to it which is at once both totally at home and strangely at odds with the ruins of the sleek buildings and orderly streets of the pre-Fall mega city whose outskirts it sits on.
People come here for a lot of reasons. Some come to make their fortune scouring the recently returned ruins further south and east. That’s one of those ‘high turnover’ jobs but there never seems to be a shortage of freshly arrived faces looking to score big. Most don’t, but that never seems to stop anyone.
As for the rest? There’s as many reasons and stories as there are people. Some come to get away from the wars back west. Some come for privacy. Recently reappeared island cities from the near mythic past are good for that. Some come and never say why, but are constantly looking over their shoulders.
It’s not hard to make a living here, if you don’t mind putting in an a hard day’s work. There’s almost always someone needs something done. Jobs boards are common outside a lot of the town’s businesses. The best jobs tend to be word of mouth though and Rousseau’s – a combination watering hole and pawn shop – is one of the best places to hear them.
