Its just after sunset when John’s traveling down the docks, his grey cloak on, and his head downcast. He seems to be heading towards a dark, clustered alleyway even as he glances around, looking to
see if Kaji is keeping up, mostly quiet for the moment. The docks are a little less busy at the
moment then one might expect, as its that leery time between when the day walking humans go home, and the nocturnal D-bee’s come out to play. That… Might of been chosen on purpose by John, or not.
Who can tell with the young magi?
“Where are we gooooing~~” Kaji not quite whines as he trails along after, making up for the
distance that’s spread between him and John due to distraction of some sort or another. It’s a weird
time of the day to be out, but he’s sure been out later and in worse places.
He makes a face at the smells that waft from the tanneries and the fish market, immensely
preferring the latter over the former if he had to make a choice, but together the two are just
They are plently of people who would not consider Megana Shadowcleft Shifter Extradorinaire and
Priestess of the Night Eternal to be human. Despite that and her own usual dislike of humanity, she
is in fact one of them but one who holds no fear of the night for it is and has always been her time.
This evening she’s out simply patroling, slipping and sliding along masked by the shadows as she
keeps an out for interlopers or trouble in or near the territory she has claimed as her own.
It’s with a bit of surprise that she pauses to listen, catching the sound of Kaji’s voice. This is
not an area of town she wants him to wandering around after dark. Or during the day for that matter
but she’s learned not to be so very obvious with her worry for his safety. A frown crosses her face.
Where the hell is the minion she sent to watch him and warn her of this kind of thing? A good
question. One that better have a good answer for that minion’s sake. She does not notice the smell
as she moves closer and her eyes narrow as she spots the grimace on Kaji’s face. Who is with him?
“Not much further, Kaji. Then you can go back to your lady love, the professor.” The slightest of
teasing tone’s in John’s voice shows it is a joke, even though his voice has a slight, country twang
while being lyrical in sound. Even as he continues to the alleyway, he is totally oblivious to the
scrutiny that the priestess of the night is giving the pair as he stops momentarily to glance over
his shoulder and look at the grimacing Kaji… It doesn’t smell /that/ bad.
Taking out something like a smoke and an ancient, salvaged zippo, he lights up and starts smoking
before tilting his head and frowns momentarily, several dozen feet from their destination before he
tilts his head and asks quietly “You… Don’t like the docks, do you, Kat-… Kaji.” And he totally
didn’t momentarily forget the man’s name. Nope, not at all.
Kaji rolls his eyes. “Oh brother. You’ll be sorry when Ingerhast starts calling you worse things,”
he promises. He tugs the zipper of his anorak-style jacket up so the tall collar is closed that it
blocks most of the chill from his neck and chin. The jacket’s not really made for winter but it’s a
little better than it had been when he’d first had it, having since gotten it lined to be reversible.
It’s still kinda cold out though, even more so as they approach the docks.
A bit of a frown at the miss on his name, but then this is the guy that completely forgot it from
their initial introductions. Still, after having to do chores and stuff, Kaji would’ve thought the
name would stick by now.
Folding is arms in front of him to help with the warmth, Kaji shrugs. “I don’t come here that often
. Definitely don’t make it a habit at night, but I haven’t had any reason to.” He tilts his head,
brow arching, and if he’s aware that he’s being watched, he’s given no sign of it. “Why’re you out
here anyway? Are you hiding something~~” he asks, grinning a bit. Why else would they come out here at this time? Of course, it could also be that John doesn’t know any better, being from way out of town.
Megana gives the lighter a startled glance before turning her gaze onto John. Her brows raise at the
slight stumble over Kaji’s name. She doesn’t see any signs of coercion though. She can guess who the
Professor is. Spider Prof probably. For a moment the Shifter Priestess is annoyed, then amused at
herself. Her old persona sometimes hard to entirely abandon.
Should she show herself now or wait a little longer? It’s actually probably a good thing if Kaji is
making friends and she really shouldn’t be surprised or upset if he’s wandering this area in the
evening especially at his age and ooooh. For a brief moment she is horrified. What if he’s here
looking for *companionship* but then… they aren’t usually to be found quite this close to the
tanneries. Relaxing Megana makes up her mind and allows the shadows cloaking her to fade away,
quietly appearing just behind the two men. Noticing Kaji pulling his jacket close she frowns and
after making sure nothing poisonous is where it could stick him, unfastens her cloak and moves to
put it around his shoulders. Is she aware this is probably a startling action? Most likely. It
doesn’t stop her from doing it though.
He’s about to respond. Really, he is… But then a woman comes forth from the shadows and John…
Doesn’t actually look startled, only giving her a blank look while taking a slow, long drag from his
smoke, his right hand out by his side even as he tilts his head to keep a gaze on her, before slowly
turning his gaze over towards Kaji and raising an eyebrow. Then reaching up to pull his hood over
his head. But he doesn’t make any threatening moves…
And he got out of having to answer the question, so theres that.
“Wha-?! O-oh! Hey Megana!” Kaji exclaims, after a small yelp in start. He blinks at the cloak that
she’s set over his shoulders, beaming as though he hadn’t nearly leaped two feet a moment ago. “Uh,
you sure you don’t need this?” he asks, because as warm as it is, he doesn’t want to hog it, and
knowing Megana always looks after him over herself, well…
He blinks and looks over at John. “Oh! Megana, that’s John. He’s new in town- wants to study at the
Academy. John, Megana. She’s the shifter I mentioned the other day.”
Hm. Well then. Megana gives John a slight nod of.. something. Approval maybe. And interest,
definitely. Her brown eyes now lit with a mischievousness as she turns them on Kaji. “It’s cold out
here.” She finally speaks. “Take this.” The cloak is a fine thing, a dark red-black, lighter than it
looks and incredibly soft and warm. “I’m fine, but thank you.” She smiles at Kaji and is more than a
little grateful she isn’t wearing any of her sheer clothing at the moment but rather black leggings
and knee length white sweater. A bit of an unusual combination of colors for her but warm enough.
“The Academy hm? It’s not easy to get into.” Her eyes take on a faraway glint. “It’s also not easy
if you do get in. It can be worth it though. I learned a lot.” She wonders what sort of powers the
young man has but doesn’t ask yet. “May I walk with you for a time?” Megana asks Kaji. It is not a
thing she would normally do but the young Necromancer is one of the few she makes exceptions for and excerts effort over.
A momentary glance over Megana before he turns his own attention back to Kaji, tilting his head,
before saying softly “I’m going to study at the academy. Not ‘want’ to. I will.” His tone still soft,
he speaks it matter of factly, like it isn’t an issue to be discussed about at all. Can one say
‘egotistical’ much? Even as he pushes off the wall and turns, to start walking again, before adding
over his shoulder “No skin off my back. Just be careful of his spider bites, they’re probably sore.”
His head slightly downtilted so that no one walking the opposite way can see his face, he starts
whistling tonelessly even as he moves like he doesn’t care if Kaji and Megana follow… Despite
specifically asking Kaji to come along.
Maybe to fill in the void of conversation that is ‘John’… or fill the silence between his ears
with white noise. Who knows?
He’s not going to admit that the cloak is reeeally nice and warm, but after Megana’s insisted that
she’s all right, Kaji gathers the front around him a bit more like a blanket, keeping it closed off
so the cold breeze can’t get through so easily.
A flat look after John and the young necromancer glances back at Megana, shrugging. The guy’s got
some odd quirks, and that’s probably putting it lightly.
“I don’t mind if you wanna come along,” he says to Megana, smiling again. “Not sure why he wanted
to come out here at this time but I didn’t want him wandering on his own, you know?” There have been plenty of unusual and dangerous things to happen out in the city at such times.
Being what she is Megana is not unfamiliar with ego. Her own is sometimes.. problematic with her
powers. She salutes the man’s optimisim however, or certainity. At least she hopes that is what it
is. There are types of Seers who won’t learn much at the academy but then, they usually find their
way to the right place in the end anyway.
“Yeah this isn’t the best place to wander during the day. After dark.. at least you’re together.
And you know I’m nearby. Usually have a few people out here watching but it’s a large area and I’m
still… establishing things.” Megana says after a slight pause. She doesn’t find John’s behavior
that weird but she spends a lot of time with people and things who are.. we’ll go with different.
He only walks for a moment before turning down a random alleyway, whistling to himself quietly still, before he makes it over towards where there is a rather large pile of trash before glancing around, quietly. Anddd when you two both turn the corner if you follow him, you’ll find him with his arm up to his shoulder rifling through the pile of refuse with a bland expression on his face, not seeming to care the fact that it smells like the rotten socks at the bottom of davy jones locker.
Kaji’s looking for a hood on the cloak as they follow along, not so much out of wanting to be warm
so much as enjoying wearing a cloak like a Jedi…or maybe more of a Sith for the colorscheme. Hmm.
He glances back at Megana, curious, but he knows she’s been busy with things here and there. “How’s the job?” he asks before pausing when John slips down an alley. Blinking, Kaji shrugs again before following after. “…uh. What’re you doing?” he asks John once they come within sight of him again.
For instance, Megana does not at all find John digging through the trash strange and simply moves to help. She doesn’t show any sign of concern for her clothes either but then it isn’t her job to clean
the damn things anymore either. Not when she has Lli Chibt. “What’re we looking for?” The Shifter
asks. After taking in Kaji’s look she shrugs a bit, alreaady nearly to her shoulders in the pile.
“What? It’s better than a lot of things. Like that cherry monster.” She briefly scowls at the memory.
It’s been well over a year and she still hates the damned things. Except for when she was pregnant
and kept eating them and just thinking about that makes her queasy now.
“It’s been busy but good. So far not as bad as I’d worried considering my.. boss.” She has only
told Kaji who she is really running the club for. “He’s been kinda occupied other places though I
think. How have you been doing?” Cause armpit deep in a skanky dock trash pile is a totally normal
place to have a conversation.
“You don’t need to help… Almost got it…” He trails off, John seeming to get a grip on
‘something’ at the bottom of the pile, before he starts slowly pulling out… A pile of waste from
one of the vatteries, that is apparently a /lot/ heavier then it looks as he slowly pulls back.
Growling to himself as he falls on his ass, he glances to Megana and scowls ever so slightly, before
slowly standing up and muttering something before pointing at her, throwing a small cantrip at her
to clean off the refuse from her clothing… As a belated ‘thank you’, possibly? “Hey, K, get over
here for a second?” he offers even as he seems to have an issue picking up the ‘refuse’ at the
bottom of the pile. Holding it out for Kaji now?
“Busy is good.” Kaji nods at the unspecified, wandering closer as the two root around in the trash.
He’d help too if John would have at least told them what they were after. All this secrecy is
getting kind of tiring though. “Been okay. Might actually start learning stuff at the Academy. Or at
least from the Professor.” He manages not to blurt out something inane like ‘did you know Slaine’s a
fairy princess?’- mostly because he remembers she’s not //exactly// and Slaine probably wouldn’t
Head tilting, Kaji starts on over once John pulls something out. He squints at the…sheet? Not
quite sure what to make of it, obviously hesitant to take hold of it, but not merely because it
looks gross and otherwise unidentifiable. He’d hate to get any unwanted backlash of a reading from
it if it happened to trigger his psychometry.
“Um…what is that?”
Megana looks down at herself and considers. On the one hand, yay. She’s aware Kaji probably was
horrified. On the other no scut work for her familiar. Well, the night is young. She grins and looks
at the thing John pulled out. “Hm. You know it’s entirely possible they come looking for that
depending on what it’s actually from.” She does not ask what he wants with it. Nor does the Shifter
At least not until the man holds it out towards Kaji. It isn’t any kind of paper but it could still
have an adverse effect on him. “Uhm.” He knows best when it comes to his powers though. “I could
summon Appleby to carry it. He’s in my stable.” She offers. Followed by, “Had an interesting trip to
Lazlo with Slaine and Aiden recently.” Megana winks at Kaji.
He shrugs, before John remarks quietly “Its mine. I just hid it so that Nix wouldn’t get pissed at
me when I told her I didn’t have it.” So he… /Possibly/ stole from a pirate, even as he shakes his
head and sighs, before remarking quietly “I’ll just do the counter spell on the ground.” Putting
down the thing that looks like rotting, destroyed vellum, he kneels by it even as he murmers under
his breath, finishing with the words “Ad veritatem divinam luce eieci” Before he pokes the flesh
with both hands.
With a sudden ‘Poof’ like motion where it half explodes like a balloon of the days of the golden
age, a four foot long, three foot tall chest suddenly pops into existence from the two foot long,
foot tall sheet… Where physics was in /this/ aspect, one would not be able to tell, even as he
grabs it by one end, picking it up and throwing it over his shoulder before slowly standing up and
carrying the fourty pound chest. Then looking both of them over… “Well, I have what I came for.
And who is Appleby, Shadow lady?”
“Ah, you went with them?” Kaji tries not to sound upset about missing out on the trip, but he’d
only heard a bit from Slaine, aside from the redhead’s recent findings about herself and her past.
He looks back at the thing that John sets on the ground, brow furrowing. “Hid..?” Slowly he starts
to nod. The mage //had// mentioned something about studying illusions, after all. Eyes wide, Kaji
grins a bit as the object expands and becomes a chest. “Whoa, //cool//!” he says. Yeah, that thing
doesn’t look easy to carry at all. Ugh, wait, was //that// the only reason he’d been called along?
To help carry John’s loot? Not cool, man!
“Appleby- that’s the cute one with the tiny arms and the teety, right?” he asks, glancing at Megana
Megana’s eyebrows raise. She’s met a “Nix” before but it was some time ago. She wonders if they were the same person.. The Shifter Priestess blinks at the magic John does to make a chest appear from the skinthing. “Okay that is handy.” And he picked a good hiding place. Kid has some wits. “Appleby is one one of my pets.” She answers. “Some kind of alien creature. He was given as a gift to me as a baby.” That is not quite an answer.
“Uhm well, he’s cute but he’s gotten bigger. His arms are still tiny but his tongue head is as big
as my fist now and the fangs!” She grins in pride. This may give John more of an explanation but
probably doesn’t sound reassuring. She has penchant for naming nightmarish creatures innoucous
things. Also horrible monsters disguised as innocent things. Like Benny the Bunnicula, her venemous vampiric rabbit.
Rolling his shoulders, John glances to Kaji… “You want to help crack the spell on this and see
whats inside, you get to carry this half the way back, and I carry it the first half.” Then he
glances towards Megana and blinks slowly… before remarking, perhaps a touch sarcastically, “Your
the kinda woman who would prefer a sentinent, carnivous plant rather then some useless flowers,
aren’t you Megan?” Even as he starts walking forward, before stopping momentarily and glancing to
Kaji and, with perhaps a touch of a grin, remarks softly “And one who enjoys getting dirty way too
much, I’m guessing?” Could be an innuendo… or it could be a throwback to the fact he was basically
grown up on a farm, so it could be a stamp of approval. Who can tell, with the mysterious John
Taylor, master of nothing
For the description Megana gives of the creature in question, Kaji looks a little too eager about
it. “Bigger? Aaaaw. I wanna see him some time.” Maybe he just really misses having a pet of his own.
Then again that’s probably obvious every time he tries playing with Gran’s resident cat.
“…knew it,” he mutters when John tells him what he gets to do. That thing looks heavy. “Wait, you
don’t know what’s in it?” He eyes the mage and steps back to let John take the lead back, glancing
between him and Megana as he starts along after.
Megana rolls her eyes. “Seriously I have never gotten the whole flower thing. They die when you pick
them and the death can’t even power any spells so it’s point..” She winces slightly. “Yes. Yes I am.
” Megana nods. Kaji is aware of what she’s done. She has few if any remaining secrets from the young
man she sees as a son more so than either of her actual children.
She snorts a little at the getting dirty comment. That is true in so many ways and yet also not.
Her thoughts briefy go somewhere else and she glances at the cloak she put on Kaji and then shakes
her head to clear it. “Wait, you stole it without knowing what’s inside?” The Shifter laughs a bit.
Well it is a pirate chest. Hoepfully it is something good. Kaji’s eagerness over Appleby’s size
doesn’t escape Meg’s notice and sets her thinking. “Of course. I’ll bring him by Gran’s. And maybe
something else as well.”
He stops for a moment, his head tilting under his cloak for a moment as he ponders… Before John
says, in a slightly flat tone, “It looks like one of the chests my father left. There is something
of… Interest in it.” And… Is his tone a bit chilly? Who can tell. But if one can study the chest
under the lack of light, it has several runes and glyphs marked into it, and is of a similar make
and build as some chests that the older magi carry about to store there books, artifiacts, and the
like. Might be the reason for the secrecy. After a moment’s thought, though, he does add offhandedly
“And sorry for the potential insult, miss Megan. I didn’t think.” Oh, /now/ he thinks about how the
‘getting dirty’ comment could of been taken.
However, he does glance over his shoulder and looks at Megana and tilts his head, frowning
slightly, before remarking quietly “And now I know how to bribe you to not summon a hell beast on me. Excellent.” then he turns and walks forward still, apparently deciding to ignore the people thinking he was stupid… And the fact that it wasn’t /exactly/ stolen. Just given to him without express permission of the original owner.
Walking alongside of Megana, Kaji lets go of the cloak, pleased to see it falls closed when he’s
walking. He pats around in his pockets for his gloves. If he’s going to be helping with carrying
that chest, an //unknown// chest, then he’d rather play it safe than sorry.
“Your father…?” he asks, tugging one glove on, each finger into place before doing so with the
other. “So it’s magically sealed or something? Or warded? …I hope it’s not rigged to explode.”
Meg’s eyes narrow at the mention of John’s father. Or rather, a father. She is.. not fond of them
but the Shifter laughs at John. “Bribery is always good but I don’t think you have to worry about me.
Kaji is part of my family.” She does eye him for a moment. She doesn’t think he’s stupid at all and
is certain he’ll understand the warning. So long as John is a friend to Kaji or at least not trying
to him harm on purpose he’s safe from her and she’ll probably even offer him assistance if he needs
“Also sorry if I just assumed you stole it. I see nothing wrong with that anyway and didn’t mean it
as an offense either. If the Nix you met is the same I’ve met.. well. I don’t blame you for hiding
He shrugs, before saying dryly “I might as well of. Ten seconds of work to earn this little beau…
And Kaji, I doubt its rigged to explode, but if it is, don’t worry. I’m sure I’ll survive.” maybe a
slight poking of fun, or possibly pointing out that its more then likely John will be between Kaji
and the chest. Kaji, after all, knows how much John values his ‘stuff’, even as he adds offhandedly
to Megana “And no biggie. I was a scavenger before I came to Vesper, so I’ve probably stolen worse.”
As to whether the silent threat is acknowledged or not is hard to tell, both because John is facing
away, and because John looks like the kind of guy that is just waiting to grow up fleeing from
people, society, and living in a ditch or a tower in the middle of a dimensional rift, grooming his
not so evil beard.
Wiggling his gloved fingers about in testing, Kaji drops his arms again to let the cloak fall back
over him to trap the warmth. He smiles at Megana, stepping closer, if briefly, just to bump her side
lightly as they walk.
“Mmm…well, exploding or not, I’d recommend not trying to open it at Gran’s,” he notes with a wry
smirk. Well, it’s still a good ways of a walk, but hopefully they don’t run into trouble along the
Out of the things to focus on in what John says Meg picks a perhaps surpising one to focus on. “How
old are you? Or.. you don’t have to tell me that. Just curious.” She knows she only appears to be a
few years older than Kaji herself. She laughs at Kaji’s words and shakes her head. “No, Gran is not
someone you want to mess with. It’s a great place to stay if your in need of one though. Safe there.
Good food and booze.”
He shrugs, before remarking quietly “Around Kaji’s age.” Is his droll answer, even before he stops
to glance back at you, before glancing to Kaji, frowning slightly, before turning back to face you
and tilts his head, before saying softly “Of course, its impolite to ask that of you, isn’t it?”
Even as he starts walking backwards as the night slowly comes more to life. Of course, if he
admitted how good he was with magic, most would probably think he is a fair bit older then his mere
twenty two years, even as he cocks an eyebrow, his head still slightly downcast so that only those
frost blue orbs can be seen easily.
Her grin widens and Megana chuckles. “Normally women seem to not like that question. I usually say I’m twenty four. I’m not, I honestly am not sure how old I am exactly but I’m in my fifties at least.
Time can be.. different than humans usually perceive or think of it. It can also be manipulated. How
do you think the Dinosaur swamps came into being?” People like her partly, of course. There’s a soft
sigh. “I haven’t been out there in awhile. Really love that place.” For a few moments she considers
John quietly. “I was ten when I was taken into the Academy.”
Maybe a slight wince comes to his face, even though John says softly “Well, you look marvelous for
being a crone.”.. Then he gets a hint of color to his cheeks, if your eyes can be trusted, because
he said something like /that/, which would easily be an insult, before he says softly “That…
Didn’t come out right. And I was never taken to the academy. Decided to join of my own free will.”
He still walks backwards but seems to be waiting for the shoe to drop at the awkwardness that just
came out of his mouth. Both the fact it sounded like an insult, or because it could be taken as him
hitting on you.
“Well. I wanted to join, of course. Even then I usually got what I want but I still don’t know what
my Da did to get me in there. I never will. Doesn’t matter though. It was a long time ago. Don’t
worry I’ve been called a lot worse. Believe me. This morning even.” Where did Kaji meet John, Meg
wonders. He seems alright and she is glad she decided to make her presence known. It’s always good
to see Kaji and John is a lot more interesting than her wandering was likely to turn out tonight.
“How come you picked Vesper? There is also Lazlo. They’re…” She considers. “Selfish assholes even
if that’s kinda throwing stones at a glass house.” The Shifter admits.
He shrugs before John turns back around and remarks blandly “It was closer, and Vesper’s a bit more… /Interesting/.” He ends with a shrug, before glancing up to the sky, before saying over his
shoulder “And nice for your dad.” His voice far away for the moment, as if pondering something,
before shaking his head and glances over towards you again, frowning before saying slowly “Although, I’ve had more then enough selfish assholes in my life. But that just makes me a kettle, perhaps.” Ahh, self reflection, definitely the best thing for a man who can accidently sink a boat to think about.
Megana’s expression turns cold for a long moment. “Didn’t turn out so nice for him really.” The
Shifter shrugs a bit and then shifts topic back to Vesper. “It is more interesting. And sure there
are plenty of Selfish assholes here too but some of the Thirty are.. at least capable of seeing
beyonnd their own needs and wants. Lazlo on the other hand, set back and allowed the greatest city
of Magic in this entire world be utterly destroyed to the last stone and all it’s people murdered.”
She.. does not seem to be a fan.
“My apologies.” Apparently looking fit to drop the discussion of fathers, which may be a sore point
for both of them, apparently, John shrugs and falls silent for a long moment, mostly just pondering
now. He waits several moments, before asking curiously “So, your a riftwalker, yea?” Possibily
surprising that he would know that little tid-bit, maybe not. Even though he walks with his back to
you, though, his shoulders aren’t tense… Or perhaps its just his cloak doing a good job of hiding
his features. Maybe he is as thin as a stick. Probably is, if he is all magical like
“I am a Shifter, as well as a Priest of the Night Eternal.” Megana answers. After a moments
reflection she adds. “A dark Shifter actually. I no longer hide that. I have of late, begun to use
my powers to help the Light in my own fashion.” She will never be one of it’s agents, not with what
she is, with what has Marked her.. however she isn’t an agent of the Dark either. Not as it wants
her. “And my Dark Lady is not a goddess of evil as some might believe. What type of magic do you
practice? I cannot always tell simply by looking, not with humans.”
He just shrugs, before John remarks blandly “I’m just a simple farm boy, nothing more… And the
night eternal?” Then Megan would definitely not like to see John’s party trick of a ball of daylight,
probably. Frowning at the bit about ‘Light and dark’, he doesn’t chose to care about the fact that
your powers are stemmed in darkness, because honestly, who cares? Glancing over to you, he does ask softly “And why, exactly, would your dark lady be a goddess of evil? Not all that is dark is evil,
just as those of the light are not always benevolent, no? I prefer to think this world is gray…
Like my other cloak.” Because he is wearing his black cloak, at the moment.
For a long moment Megana is speechless as she stares back at John. This is a thing that does not
often happen. “You are wise beyond your years.” She finally says. “People go their entire lives not
being to see that.” She shakes her head with an expression of faint wonder. I know a thousand
different shades of grey, I can name them all. But She is, she IS the night. Everywhere,
throughought the ‘Verse, any star, an world that has a night, she touches. Neither good nor bad,
light or dark. She simply is. We celebrate her, worship and revere her. She holds dominion over many things, birth and death, peace and war, love and hate and all things that take place during the
Night. Her power is infinite and yet finite. A Half of a Whole. Incomplete on it’s own and unable to
exist without it’s other side.”
Nodding quietly, he… Doesn’t really seem to think he is that wise, or even get /why/ your
speechless. Hell, he doesn’t even seem to notice, instead just saying very, very softly “Umm…
Thank you?” Before giving another shrug, John tilting his head as he hears the bit about the eternal
night. Reserving judgement or not judging at all, instead just saying softly “Interesting concept.
Mind if I ask how you became one of her priestess’?” Perhaps interesting, the fact that he doesn’t
seem to mind the idea, him standing on the fence for the moment, before he continues walking,
shrugging his shoulders at his burden, before saying softly “And I’m guessing her companion would be… The infinite day?”
“That.. is a long and very unpleasant story. One that might put your soul at risk to hear and
certainly your life.” She eyes Kaji for a moment. He seems half asleep. He knows the whole of it of
course. “There are.. things, forces, beyond the imagining of most and that is a good thing. For this
world and all worlds. I was intended from birth to be given to such a force and then wrested from
it’s clutches at the last second. Still, it marked me. It hunts for me always. My Dark Mother
protects me and helps to hide me, and I’ve made some other bargins that have helped as well. I was
searching for such things, still, she found me. I always loved the night. Even in the brief time
before i was.. Touched, or so I was told.” Her gaze is serene as she speaks. “And yes. basically. Of
course they’re are many such gods and goddesses and forces. As many as their are worlds and
dimensions and universes. There are less that encompass so many at once but.. we live in interesting
times. More so than most would prefer with the Rifts opened on our world. It is infinitely
preferable to that of one without such things though in my eyes.”
Shrugging, John falls silence for several seconds. He… Doesn’t seem disturbed, or even that
surprised, instead thinking for a moment, before asking, perhaps a touch jokingly, “So, carnvious
flower or carnvious tree, which is your preference?” Trying to distract you from the issues you have,
or possibly just making a bit of fun. Better then making a joke about being touched by celestial
forces. Yea, because /that/ couldn’t be an innuendo at all. Rolling his shoulders for a moment, he
frowns before asking quietly “Is there a place I can set this down for a bit and put my feet up? I…
Don’t know this part of town well. Yet.”
The Shifter Priestess grins at John. Since he mentioned not knowing opening the chest would do she’s been considering the problem as well as noticing Kaji’s sleepiness. Gran’s is not the place for this. “Depends on my needs at the moment really. I’ve seen both. Actually saw some carniverous rocks awhile ago. Someone kicked one. He was quite surprised when it screamed at him.”
Megana stops and nods, her mind made up. “A moment.” She looks around for a minute, making sure no one is in the way or about to be and then steps forward several feet. She quite for several more moments but it doesn’t take long for a tear to begin to open in the air in front of her. It’s slow
at first and an odd shimmery blue, similar to how some leylines appear but quickly turns into a
circular portal so somewhere Else. A room, white stone floors and walls and doorways leading from
all four walls. “My tower is near, though it hardly matters when I can do this. Please though, make
yourself at home though I’d suggest avoiding the stables. My pets aren’t all.. tame. Oh and don’t
mind the imp. He’s my familiar. He won’t harm you, unless you ask him to. He usually prefers women though.”
There is a snort even as he shakes his head, John remarking blandly “I doubt your familiar is the
one I have to worry about wanting to harm me.” his tone dry, he takes a step forward and… Stares
at the rift instead, John tilting his head before holding up a hand to do… Something. But decides
against messing with dimensional manipulations. “You don’t have dimensional wards on your place?” he asks curiously, even as he waits for you to enter first, rather then entering himself even as he decides to keep quiet that he knows dimensional magics as well, instead saying blandly “And if you have coffee, That would be amazing, but please, you first.” Chivalry? Perhaps… Or he is smart
enough to not enter a portal without letting any traps be disarmed by there owner first. Paranoia is,
after all, a self-fulfilling prophecy
“Not quite. There aren’t a lot of people who can do this and Shifters tend to avoid each other. It
would be far too much hassle to have to hoof it back to my place all the time anyway. I’m hardly
defenseless with my other powers and the other residents of my tower. This might be glowtown and
sure it’s rowdier than other parts of the city but there are still Armsmen about and I’ve befriended
my neighbors.” It’s also just behind Club Pandemonium and the place is full night and day. “I have
coffee, and,” She grins at Kaji. “Hot Chocolate.” The Shifter finishes as she steps through the
portal. It’s not difficult for her to hold open from the other side after all. “The rest of the
rooms are at least a bit furnished.”
Nodding, John hesitates for only a second before basically thinking ‘fuck it’, and walking through
the portal. If Kaji follows along, thats his business, but John decides he would like to sit down
for at least a while, as well as see more about what this shifter apparently has, even as he hums
softly under his breath, his hands mostly holding onto the chest, and he… Perhaps surprisingly,
doesn’t seem at all disorientated by moving through the portal, instead saying softly “Well then,
mistress’, lead the way to your humble abode.” And he follows along after you towards where you lead him in your tower. If its a dungeon cell, though, at least he has a quick and easy way to get out.
The Rift fades away after they all are through. “Don’t worry, this place is bigger than it seems on
the outside but this is the elevator, here.” The Shifter heads towards the door in front of her, or
rather, the set of sliding doors. They open to reveal a small room that soft tinkly tinny sounding
music emits from. “That’s an Old World joke, the music. Anyway, these doors slide open and so are
easy to see on every floor. The “G” button opens outside.” Meganna presses a “K” button. “For
kitchens. B is bedrooms, T is the top floor anhd the way onto the roof and where I *live*, there are
store rooms and work rooms and a bahting room and the Imp’s room and my servents. Oh and the stables.”S” for that one. “L” is library. Some of the books are damnded dangerous.” If there is a dungeon she doesn’t mention it nor is there anything so obvious a “D” floor.
At the mention of Library, John’s eyes /immediately/ go to the ‘L’ button… And he falls silent,
stilling as if thinking of something highly, highly complicated. That is… how to break into the
library without being noticed, even though Megana would probably not realize this. Not to steal
anything, but rather just to study in peace and as a measure of professional curtsy. But he doesn’t
remark upon that, instead saying slowly “So we are going to the kitchens… Probably better for my
health then the bedchambers.” He slowly lowers the chest, and goes to lean against the back of the
elevator, smirking a bit about the old world joke.
She seems amused at John’s expression as he eyes the L. “As I said, make yourself at home. One of
the bedrooms actually belongs to Kaji, but he really likes it at Gran’s and I get it. I stayed there
most of a year. Just be careful, and if something looks or feels bad, maybe don’t touch it.” She
laughs. “The Kitchens. I’m starving. And I’ve heard guys your age are always hungry. I only use my
bedroom for sleeping but I don’t keep track of what familiar does in his. Devilians are lesser
demons though. Oh he could appear as a two year old human child but I’m guessing you can see through that illusion. Don’t be surprised if you do see any children of any kind here. I might follow
practice the darker arts but I do have rules. Children are to be protected. Always.” She says very
firmly. “Alot of the urchins come through when they are hungry or need a place to sleep.”
Nodding quietly, John tilts his head, before saying softly “Kaji’s your family. Of course he has a
room.” His tone, perhaps, a bit soft, even as he remarks dryly “So, you have a staff, or am I being
put on kitchen duty?… And I wouldn’t dream of entering your library without announcing it first.”
No, he wouldn’t dream of it, because its exactly what he would do. Ahh, lies of omission seem to
come almost naturally to him, because he wouldn’t need to imagine or dream of it, because it is
completely in his nature… Perhaps he should of been born a cat.
“If kids are around often, then perhaps they’d see a show if I’m around. As to you only sleeping
in your room, I’m surprised you wouldn’t bring a book or two in there and read. Having such an
estate seems… Exhausting.” Still, though, he doesn’t seem to really have an answer as to how guys
his age are always hungry, instead John’s expression showing, perhaps, a touch of consideration.
What, exactly, is he trying to figure out what that statement meant. Then, of all things, he looks
down at his stomach area. Does he seem like he is going to eat you out of house and home?
Megana is even more amused by John’s answer. “I have someone who cooks. I.. can eat a lot of things humans usually don’t or can’t and have unusual tastes but I can’t cook worth a damn and gave up trying to learn a long time ago.” Noticing where he looks next Meg laughs. “I’m hardly an expert but something about how you’re still growing and are so active. Obviously I eat more than my share.” She is.. not a thin woman. Elpida has told her she suits the greek standard more than most of the women around here much to the Shifter’s amusement.
Frowning, he tilts his head and rolls his eyes, before looking at you for a long, long moment…
Then John remarks dryly “I think you eat a perfectly healthy amount, but thank you for trying to be
polite about the fact I’ll probably out eat you. And you refer to people as if you weren’t human?”
His tone a little thoughtful even as he shrugs. The fact you can’t cook, however, almost, /almost/
gets a look of surprise from his face, but then again, its basic skills. Totally not helped by the
fact that he happens to be able to bring water to a boil just by glancing to it, not at all… “What
sorts of unusual tastes?” He also has to stop his stomach from growling at the idea of food. not
like he didn’t skip lunch and dinner.
“I read in the library.” Megana shrugs. “I don’t sleep a whole lot and random times usually so it’s
not hard to do. This tower is new thing for me. Still I’m away a lot. I also had one of my longtime .
.aquantances die recently defending me. His son lives here now and helps looks after the place while
I’m gone and my imp likes the status and space upgrade so he does a lot too. It would be a lot of
work alone but with them.. it’s not.” She isn’t above paying the kids a bit for chores either. She’s
quiet as she considers her answer to his last questions. “Well. There are a lot of nonhumans around
here and for a very long time, more of my life than not, I hated almost every other human in
existence and I wasn’t capable of feeling many human emotions. Gods help you if you weren’t a kid or some sort of alien, d-bee, or demon.” She shakes her head. “I still don’t.. like a lot of people. I
don’t care about them… but I can feel empathy now, and.. love. I have family that matters to me. I
was lucky, or incredibly cursed. I’m not sure which really.” A male voice pipes up in answer to
John’s question. “Hearts kid. She likes hearts. Or more specificly the hearts of her vanquished foes.
Fresh and warm and “SHUTUP!” Megana snaps at her familiar, a potbellied redskined horned little
creature with wings. He’s also wearing lime green velvet pants and a bright yellow vest. “What the…
Jesus. Don’t let Varos see you in that! or.. like, anyone!” She stares at Lli Chibt in consternation.
“I’m serious. Go naked before you wear that in public.” He crosses his arms over his chest, flicks
his tail and huffs, stomping hooved feet across to the slam the coldbox open and begin pulling out
the ingredients for sandwhiches. Imps of his type are often considered adorable by people unaware of the fact that they are demons with a penchant for debauchery and torture among other things.
He can’t hold back the smirk or the snicker that comes from /that/, before John tries, and fails, to
say with a straight face, “Hearts are definitely a normal thing for a woman to be receiving. I
suppose the only question is do they still have to be beating, bloody, and be non-poisonous… And
ignore her, I’m rather certain the woman would love you, little familiar. Perhaps well enough to
allow you to torture them to your little demonic content.” An eyeroll follows the slight smirk on
his face, even as he walks over, taking off his cloak to reveal… A black tunic with short sleeves,
and lean, hardly noticed muscles, apparently going to immediately help the imp make sandwiches… Or make sure he isn’t adding seditives and poison to it. Probably both, if Kaji had told the woman
anything about him
People that know anything about Shifters and familiar bonds will know that while Shifters often
summon demons and attempt to bargain with or control them, they do not take them as familiars. If
she really has done such a thing the ease with which she seems to have done it and control she seems
to have over the imp are probably either impressive or terrifying. It is as usual with her, a long
story. Yes Lli Chibt had grumbled and looks pissed off but he makes totally normal and non poisonous or drugged sanwhiches and he does it without complaint. Once he’s finished Megana pulls a key from her boots and tosses it the imp and he cackles with glee and dashes out of the room. “Liqour cabinet key. Actual cabinet with a small amount of booze cause he’d drink a cellar dry easily if given the chance but he likes having a choice of drinks.”
Well, at least there isn’t any poison in it. And John, surprisingly… Seems well at ease with the
fact Megana has a lesser demon as a familiar. Or more likely, he just doesn’t give a shit so long as
it doesn’t attack /him/. Hopping up onto the counter with his four to six sandwiches (he’s hungry,
damnit.), he devours two within a few minutes, not making any conversation but instead eating like
the worlds going out of style. After the first two, though, he starts eating with honest to god
/manners/, all proper and polite like, after having assauged the hunger monster enough. With a nod,
he asks quietly, after a small, almost dainty bite of the sandwich, “Easily understandable. Does he
drink as much as a Satyr?.. Also, you never answered my question. Nor about whether they need to be boiled in onions or just roasted.” Ahh, dark humor… “Of course, one might point out dark humor’s like a pair of legs. Not everyone has it.”
Megana laughs. She likes this kid. “I’ve found people don’t often share my sense of humor.” A beat. “I don’t cook them.” Truth or more dark humor? She’s eating too but a bit slower. “I’ve just been a
lot of places where you had to eat things you normally wouldn’t if you wanna survive. I got used to
it. Raw meat doesn’t bother me, or bitter or spicy roots and herbs or mold or dirt. And other beings
have different ways and ideas towards what is and isn’t edible. Sometimes you want to fit in or
“Fair enough.” He ends with a shrug. Of course, its probably better for Megana to not mention the
bit about how she views him as a ‘kid’. Probably because then John would be prompted to do an almost adolescent showcasing of how he is not a child. Leaning against the wall by the counter, John tilts his head before saying slowly “I guess… That the question is would you rather cry at reality, or
laugh in spite of its mercilessness?”
She answers immediately. “Laugh.” She does not often and has very rarely cried in her life outside
of episodes of extreme pain where her body was simply reacting that is. Kaji is actually one of the
rare people who have witnessed her emotional tears. “I either find things funny or get pissed off
usually and neither one of those inspire tears. “But when you can tear and bend reality to your will.
. maybe it’s easy to see things differently. Or maybe it’s just how I am. I’ve never claimed to be
normal.” She smiles.
“Says the woman who is in her fifties yet looks like a young aristocratic woman just entering
society. I never would of dreamed you were not entirely normal.” Cue the eyeroll to go with the dry
response even as John slowly pushes off the counter after polishing off his fifth sandwich to turn
and walk towards the doorway to the kitchen. Apparently not getting that that could be constituted
as rude for him to either suddenly leave a conversation or expect you to follow him… It might just
be that the library is calling to him with its siren’s song.
Her smile widens into a grin. John reminds her of.. someone. Who? Herself maybe if she hadn’t been a totally self aborbed shit with delusions of grandeour at that age. “Ah well, you learn or you don’t.
” She murmurs before dusting off her hands and following. She’s well aware of the books allure and
is curious if he can actually read any of them. Kaji can read and well, at least in english and what
he calls Japanese but most people can’t. It isn’t something standardly taught anymore and hasn’t
been for a long time. “Reading is kinda a lost art for most people. Even if someone is willing to
teach they don’t have time or reason to learn. I did, and I have a spell that allows to me to read
almost every written word and an opposite that allows to me understand almost every spoken language. The drawbacks are that I lose all ability with one or the other while using it. I’m always
pleasantly surprised to find anyone that can read, well, anything.”
“Fascinating. Maybe you’ll share those spell’s with me.” Even as he enters the elevator, reaching
over to hit ‘L’, John waiting for you to enter before he does so, and then leans against the back
wall of the elevator, before John points out dryly “And I did grow up on this earth, as an FYI. I
know Literature is something of a lost art for most.” Not admitting or denying that he can read,
even as he tilts his head and frowns slightly at the grin Megana has on her face… And falling
silent, evidently a touch curious about /why/ she’s smiling, but not
Megana considers a bit. Hm. That could be interesting. “I’ll think about it.” She nods though and
responds “I was born in Tolkeen. I suppose I grew up here though. At the Academy. But I’ve traveled,
a lot. Most of the people I know well aren’t from here but a few are. Slaine is from this earth.
She’s a Mystic. I think Aiden is though he’s kinda a mystery really.” She’s not sure if Kaji has
mentioned where he’s from. “My friend Elpida is from earth but a different time. She pissed off a
greek God in her orginal time. They’re kinda bitches. I met Persephone over the winter.” The Shifter
shakes her head. “It’s better to have a god owe you one than anythings but..” It had been kinda
With a nod and a shrug, John tilts his head even as his gaze turns momentarily sharp and considering, him staring at Megana… And just staring, in absolute silence, for several minutes until the elevator door ‘dings’. His expression would probably take a moment or twos earnest study to actually figure out what he was thinking about, before he goes to enter and see the library. He doesn’t, however, seem particularly perturbed, instead keeping the council of his own thoughts for the time being… Or just letting her say what she wants to
“Things happened that most people don’t know about and never will and we were all involved with them. If you hang around any of us it could come up. It’s just pretty unbelivable sounding shit to most I guess. And the general population really doesn’t need to know that the world nearly ended and they were almost sacrficed by necromancing old god cultist assholes.” Her tone is mild as if she’s
discussing the weather aqs they enter the library. “Or any of the other numerous threats to their
extense they face on a semi regular basis for that matter. If I’d gotten paid for all the times we’ve saved this damned city from annihilation I’d own it.” She shakes her head and then shrugs. “I’m getting used to I suppose. My orginal plan was to just find a new world to live on.” She smiles in Kaji’s direction. “That was before though.”
“Hard to leave those you care about, I suppose… And owning a city sounds hard. I’d probably only
manage to hit small village owning material.” He ends with a shrug before he stops… And just
stares. At the library. A library that is surely a wonderous thing to behold, and his eyes look over
all the books longingly. Finally, something he can /understand/. John moves immediately over towards one of the shelves to grab a book. and, knowing his luck, its a nasty book holding a world eating demon.
John is just a magnet for trouble.
Megana gives John a startled glance. That is an aspect she hadn’t considered before. It would be..
difficult to run a city she’s begun to actually care about, the city where her chosen family lives
even. “Huh.” Regaining her soul and her humanity has been… challenging. “Some of these can be
dangerous if you actively try to practice what is in them but nothing is going to hurt you form just
picking it up. At least none of the books will. I’d not pick up anything in my work room. I use a
lot of poisons and drugs for different things. Some just trading or selling. Oh, if you see a rabbit
anywhere don’t let him bite you unless you like being high and don’t mind losing a bit of blood. The
rest of the animals are confined to the barn. Usually.” She frowns. “Well Pony isn’t but Pony isn’t
an animal despite the name.” Some books are set alone on stands or small displays and some of those seem.. wrong. Bound in some sort of skin, or inked with blood or just possesing a dark or foul aura for those able to sense it. However at least one is the opposite, feeling entirely wholesome and
Good and yet another holds a very old but caregully cared for bible. Many are in forgein languages
or long hunted and sought for surving books from the old world. “At least forty years worth of
collecting. And its still a pretty small room but I try.”
