Aiden had taken Slaine back to Grans to see to her injuries. The pixies had been rounded up a couple of Justicars are being held in a cell in the Headquarters. Generally, disturbances like this don’t warrant such attention but an attempted abduction – or that’s what it looked it – in the middle of the square probably does.
Knowing that Kaji and Frizz would want to question the pixies, the Justicars have shown them into the room where they’re being held. There’s two of them – of the three that were around, one had got away it seems – not overly tall and somewhat delicate in features. They’re looking a bit sullen about their current situation.
Miss Frizz studies the pixies carefully with both eyes and nose, her whiskers twitching as she does so. These beings might seem small in stature compared to humans, but to her they’re also tall. But she doesn’t find that at all intimidating anymore. A creature’s size apparently has little or correlation with their capacity to commit evil.
She’s waiting for Kaji to start, mostly so that when they refuse to answer she has a reason to shove them around for trying to hurt Slaine.
That someone had been so bold as to attempt abducting their friend out in public and in broad daylight doesn’t really speak well for intentions, or at the very least it seemed to make it out that whoever was behind it was desperate to have Slaine. There’s only a bit that Kaji’s come to know of things going on with the redhead, but he still feels there’s a large part of it he’s unaware of. He’s not so sure about if this is related to it either. Then again that’s part of what he hopes they can clarify.
The events had not left him in a good mood, but then when it concerns his friends, that’s perhaps to be expected. He’d flipped his coat inside-out to the cultist blacks that he’d had his anorak lined with. It was more so because he figured it might be good to have something that blended in more in the shadows if they had to sneak around as they often seemed to do. At least, that’s what he’s convinced himself of.
There’s absolutely no reason he should be wearing his hood as he steps into the room that the pixies are being detained in, but maybe he’s given into the whole “Sith” vibe for the time being, hoping the reminder of what he did to one of the imps might help loosen tongues a bit without the extra effort. Intimidation for the win?
From beneath the shadows of his hood he looks from one to the other just as the little mouse does, folding his arms. Gosh, how do you start? Darth Vader knew what he was asking for when he demanded the whereabouts of the Death Star plans from the princess. They don’t even have the who’s, here.
That seems as good a spot as any, then.
“Who sent you?” he asks, going right to the point.
Now that they’re closer Frizz and Kaji can see that there’s a male and female pixie. Not that it really matters in the scheme of things.
The one that Kaji ‘force gripped’ glares balefully at the youth while the female skitters closer to get a look at Frizz. She doesn’t seem to be aware of what the little mouse did and she might be sizing the rodent up for a mount.
“We were no’ sent….” comes the sullen answer from the male. The accent is lilting and Kaji, at least, might recognise it as Celtic – though there aren’t many these days who would place it. “… we came for ourselves …An’ we ain’ done anythin’ wrong.”
Suss lets the pixie get as close as she wants and studies her in return. She stands up on her back legs as the male tries to explain. Or something. <~ You attacked our friend out in the open, and you were trying to take her somewhere else, without asking her if she wanted to go. How is that not ‘anythin’ wrong’? ~>
Her telepathic words don’t convey accents very well, but the displeased anger is all too clear. She’s already trying to figure out which of the two to smack into the cell’s back wall first.
“Well, I suppose it could be worse,” begins Elpida as she arrives. “I could have pissed off Titania or something.” She’s grateful, for the moment, that she is not a tiny faerie. That would probably be worse than having snakes for hair. Probably.
She’s not a hundred percent sure.
Kaji arches a brow, still eyeing the one who’s replied. He leaves Miss Frizz to watch the other, knowing she’s capable of holding her own- an advantage that the pixies might not know, but hey.
“No? I’d say trying to take someone against their will is pretty wrong. You know that’s considered kidnapping, right?” He nods along with the psychic mouse’s points.
There’s a pause to look over his shoulder at Elpida when the Gorgon arrives. Kaji’s attention quickly shifts back to the imps they’re interrogating. Glancing between them, the young necromancer’s gaze settles upon the male again.
“So you came because you wanted to? What for?” he asks before pressing on with, “How did you know to come here?”
The pixies eyes widen as Elpida walks in, both of them eyeing the snakes that writhe on her head. They … seem to know something of her – or at least the Gorgon, that is. Both of them make sure to keep their distance and not to look at her.
The small female stops as Frizz rises up on her hind legs but she doesn’t back off. “We knew where ta fin’ tha gran’daughter … her whereabouts has been made known by Bres’ minions.”
The granddaughter. All three of them in the cell with the pixies will remember, well enough, that there’s a bounty on Gran and they’ve been taking extra care to make sure the older Mystic is protected.
To maintain the illusion of an innocent little mouse, Miss Frizz makes a point of looking at Kaji before reaching out with her telekinesis to ‘pull’ the female pixie against the bars of their cell none too gently. In fact, if the creature smacks her face into the bars, Suss won’t feel even the tiniest bit of remorse.
<~ Who is Bres? ~> She even leans toward the pixie just a little as she asks.
There’s a frown at that. “So you’re working under Bres, then?” Kaji says nothing for a moment as Frizz makes with her best Dark Knight impression, waiting to give them a chance to answer before he adds on.
“So were you intending to use Slaine as leverage against her grandmother?” he asks after a moment, considering. “…also, you’re welcome to explain yourselves without waiting for the right questions. It’ll save us all some time. But~ if you’re not wanting to cooperate…” He glances back at Elpida meaningfully.
“I’d answer her questions,” says Elpida, gesturing at Frizz. “She’s scarier than I am when she gets riled. One time, I saw her crush someone bit by bit until they went from being, well, you know..” She gestures her arms wide and then slowly brings them together until her hands are clasped together, indicating he was very painfully small indeed by the time Frizz was done.
She’s also lying a bunch. “Anyway, she’s scary.” A nod.
“Nnngggghhh” The females face is smooshed against the bars and her eyes widen in a scared type of look. “Bres the beautiful.” she says rather quickly in that lilting way of hers, eyes darting between Frizz and Elpida. “King o’ the Fomori.” They’ve heard of the Fomori before – Slaine and Aiden have mentioned them, but not given more detail.
In fact, they’ve battled a few in the recent past. Tall, grey skinned, one-eyed giants.
“Aye aye” the male says quickly. “Moira McClennan would come for her Granddaughter and then we could claim the bounty. Make ourselves rich ….” By the way his eyes dart to and fro, there’s probably more he’s not saying. Offering information doesn’t seem to be what they’re going to do and they might all remember that Aiden had said pixies were stupid.
‘claim the bounty’? Oh husks no. Not over THIS mouse’s dead body. Suss releases the female pixie only to grab them BOTH and slam them BOTH against the cell’s bars.
<~ You will both listen to me and listen VERY well. ~> Miss Frizz starts to pace back and forth along the floor in front of where the pixies are squished, the new kink in her tail very obvious now. <~ If you live to see him again, tell the Fomori king that Moira McClennan… ~> At this point she stands as tall as she can again and looks at each pixie squarely, her whiskers and ears flat against her head in the most threatening expression she knows. <~ … is not his to claim. Any further attempts to claim the bounty on her will not be dealt with so gently. ~>
On that last word, she SHOVES them all the way to the back wall of the cell. Not with every bit of strength she knows she has, but with as much as she used to use to swat that ugly mouse doll around. Enough to get a pixie’s attention.
Kaji whistles as Miss Frizz tosses the pixies around to underline her threat. Paired with the things Elpida had earlier said, he sees it as a pretty good way to secure that bluff. If he’s honest with himself he’d admit that at that moment the little mouse is pretty scary.
Still, he grins crookedly even as the pixies are subjected to a bit of Batman brutality as he idly wonders if Miss Frizz is capable of projecting a more gravely voice aside from her own. It’s all by thought, right?
“Ahem. Aside from that. I’m getting pretty tired of beating around the bush. I mean, Miss Suss can shake the info out of you but she might overdo it if you guys keep being so tight-lipped about things.” He unfolds his arms, holding his hands up as he flexes his fingers. “So how about I just get the info directly? I’ll just have to pull a soul or two out and that can get kinda messy, but you guys don’t seem that important that anyone’d come for you, so no big loss, right?”
“You know what,” says Elpida.
“You really don’t wanna be trying to claim any bounties on that redhead. Trust me, she’s a ginger. More trouble than she’s worth.” A nod follows. “You won’t get rich. You’ll just get squished by a mouse. or turned to stone. Or, you know… just dead. Eh. Your call, though. I mean, all I have to do is look at you and I have a couple of cute statues for my yard, right?” Fangy smile. “Listen to the mouse.” She points at Frizz.
The pixies ‘oof’ as they’re slammed to the wall of the cell, eyes going wide as Frizz speaks. “I I I Are ye kiddin’. No one tells Bres a thing an’ there’ll be others after her as well…” That’s an honest at least, it’s just that the female looks like she’s going to wet her pants – at Frizz’s threat and at the thought of telling Bres anything.
The male just glances at Kaji. Whether it’s his threat doesn’t match up against what Frizz is doing or if the youth just looks so innocent. Maybe under other circumstances the threat of having ones soul pulled out would be enough.
It’s Elpida that seals the deal though. “There there there ain’ nothin’ we can do to stop the bounty but but but we can spread the word she’s well protected …”
Suss lets both pixies go, but she clearly focuses her attention more directly on the female. <~ Not good enough. That will only make the bounty on Gran bigger. Perhaps we should do some word spreading instead. How about… you two were stopped by a MOUSE? ~> She’s staying well out of their reach, but she’s sure taunting them to the best of her ability. Maybe she’s been watching Meg and her imp-friend?
She looks up at Elpida and moves out of the way so she’s no longer between the Gorgon and the pixies. Let’s see them keep up a brave face now.
It’s the snakes, it has to be. That many eyes all staring at once.
“That sounds reasonable. Otherwise, I can introduce you to the fact that many snakes eat their prey live and you really are just the right size.” Elpida’s snakes are writhing actively atop her head. “Anyway, that sounds like a real good idea, actually.” It might buy them some time.
The pout that crosses Kaji’s face probably doesn’t help for impressions of intimidation. He lets Frizz and Elpida work out things regarding the subject of bounties, but that doesn’t really give them any more information otherwise. His fingers twitch, but he doesn’t try anything yet as he tries to get the pixies’ attention again to see if they’ll answer anything else.
“What does Bres want with Gr- with Moira anyway? He’s been going through a lot of trouble. Is there any interest in Slaine as well, or is that just you being inventive on your part?”
Maybe they’re all just getting used to how rough a place RIFTS Earth really is. Slaine has never had a problem with being tough when she needs to. It might sadden her though to see how it’s affecting Kaji.
“Ye don’ understand, no one stops Bres when he wants somethin’ an’ he’ll wait till he gets it.” the pixies moan, looking very, very scared. These three for all how they look are terrifying. The manage to pass a look between each other before glancing back to Kaji “The talk is tha’ he wants the Daughter of Danu isolated. Alone in this world an’ on her own. We figured we would use her for her own downfall – Moria McClennan is a powerful Mystic but she’s proven her granddaughter is a weakness.”
That might send some worrying messages to the three of them. Isolated and alone. Have they just made themselves targets.
Miss Frizz isn’t really used to thinking in that way, so being targeted doesn’t really cross her mind. At the mention of Slaine being considered a weakness, she looks up at Elpida and Kaji again. That makes more sense, and is more worrisome at the same time.
<~ I think perhaps you should keep thinking that. ~> Because then she’ll get MORE people to throw at walls like ugly mouse dolls. Maybe she’ll throw them hard enough to hear something go crunch.
Elpida turns away, letting out a sigh.
“Great.” She’s good at putting on the act, but honestly, this is the last thing she needs to hear. “Ugggh,” she groans, a hand going over her face. “Okay. Okay. This is… ugh.”
She combs fingers through her snakes.
It’s impossible to have gone through everything that Kaji has without something of it latching on. Given how this world is and its effects on his existing abilities, there’s no telling how things might have gone one way or another, but early on it’s been clear to him that in this place it’s survival of the fittest. It’s also made him particularly protective of those he’s befriended, given that he’s sure he wouldn’t still be around without them.
It’s like a shadow crosses his face as the pixies answer his inquiries, and maybe if they’d any doubts that he wouldn’t go ganking their souls any time soon, they might have second thoughts then.
The question mark is implied, the tone heavily suggesting that it be answered.
“If it’s as you said, then you probably would’ve just put yourselves at the king’s mercy, wouldn’t it? By taking Slaine to use against Moira, wouldn’t that just have gone against his plans if you brought her away from this world?”
“The Child of Danu is powerful and wields the Crown,” the female says as if that’s explanation enough to Kaji’s question. “An’ who knows what a God thinks…” Oh yes, Bres the beautiful styles himself a God and he may well be. Who can tell with Rifts Earth? If Kaji or Elpida are familiar with the old legends, he was to the Celts – long ago.
“I don’ see why it would.” The male says “We would ha’ let the girl go when we had the grandmother.” Aiden did say they weren’t very smart but how would Slaine have reacted if she was freed because Gran sacrificed herself for her? “We weren’ takin’ her from this world … jus’ relocatin’.”
Suss freezes, thinking over what the pixies just said. ‘the child of danu… wields the crown’. Are they saying they think GRAN has been using the crown when it’s been Slaine this whole time? She can’t ask the others about it right now, though. Not in front of these two. So instead she turns to look at them again. <~ You truly believe that this Bres person would actually let Slaine go? ~> She leans toward them just a little and arches her whiskers forward. <~ You really ARE as vacant in the brains as you look. ~>
Then, as if she’s learned all she needs to from the pair in the cell, she skitters toward the door. Hopefully one or both of the others will get the hint and accompany her.
Kaji closes his eyes, deciding it’s probably not worth the headache trying to explain or work out for the two why their plan probably wasn’t the greatest to begin with. At least some of the tension bleeds from him, and sighing, he shakes his head at them.
“Whatever. In any case, you’re not going anywhere now. It’ll probably be the Child of Danu’s call as to what happens with you.”
He’s not sure of that but at least they’d gotten some information to pass along to Slaine.
Turning, he starts to follow Miss Suss out, his coat swirling after him.
The pixies slumped to the floor when Suss finishes with them, blinking as they try to work out what they’d got wrong. “It was a good plan…” They mutter.
It really wasn’t. If they had planned on taking Slaine elsewhere to draw Moira out. Bres might have intervened but he might not have. He might have a reason why he wants the younger redheaded Mystic alone and isolated.
But what does this mean for the others?
“…you still think so, huh?” says Elpida. She bends down to pat one of them on the head. Gingerly. Lightly.
“There, there. I know what it’s like to go into something with a good plan — one you think is good — and promptly find out you had no idea what ytou were jumping into. In this case, that’s you instead of me so I can laugh.”
Elpida, Kaji and Miss Frizz are invited to interrogate the pixies that had attempted to make off with Slaine.
