The distance between Vesper and Richmond is dangerous. Unpatrolled in the main, bandits and demons roam. Still, it’s necessary to transport goods between the cities and today is no different. Supplies are needed and the cargo is a little more valuable than usual. Exactly //what// it is, nobody is saying but three transports are rumbling their way along the road.
Extra support has been recruited to provide protection … with such a showing, surely nothing can go wrong, right?
Sindri is -always- down for a decent job, and a chance to see some thing he hasn’t seen before it’s just what he wants. His Ultimax II has little difficulty in navigating places that are muddy and the like. Sindri’s bot/power armor seems to at times..lag behind to cover the back, or he’ll try to range ahead. Trying to find out where he fits in as it is. Unsure of other’s abilities, so on and so forth. An Ooroo hops alongside one of the three trucks.
Clearing several yards in a single, easy leap, she — for it is a she — bears her rider along the road. The rider in question is the Australian ‘Clever Man’ known as Clancy Drover, and he is quite pleased with himself.
After all, it’s not everyday he gets to go on the road with an old friend — and some new ones. “Bridge!” he says into the radio. ‘THUMP!’ (the sound of the Ooroo’s legs and tail striking the ground as she lands from each magnificent hop forward). “You gotta try this some — ,” ‘THUMP!’ ” — time!”
He pauses to leap over some debris on the side of the road. “We could swap — ,” ‘THUMP!’ ” — seats!” He chuckles at that, knowing full well what her answer will be, and glances around at the rest of the ‘support’ accompanying the convoy. When he spots Maddy in her mech, he smirks.
“Those Tits look familiar! That you, Mad One?”
Stella’s black truck is one of the three transports so is rumbling along the road at a steady pace. Honestly, boring run is boring. But, with the increased chance of a raid, the convoy has all kinds of escort, including a particular Clever Man riding an Ooroo alongside her truck. “Pass,” she calls back to Clancy as the ‘Roo lands again. She’s honestly surprised that the ‘mutts’ weren’t allowed to run loose for this trip. And, she’s glad at the same time considering that at least one of them would want to hang its head out the window.
Tits strides alongside the convoy, music blaring from the speakers on the psychedlic painted Titan (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=WccfbPQNMbg). It’s not as if her mech could be quiet anyway. “Mad One present and incorrect. How are you doing, Joey? Hey…does all that hopping around mean you won’t have children? Those impacts look mighty uncomfortable.”
“That you, BFF?” That would be Stella that Maddy is talking to now. “Love the color of your truck. That’s deep, man. You can peer into it and see infinity…and a little scratch on the passenger door.”Thumping alongside the small convoy is the independent mercenary known as ‘Hunter’ and his Gunwolf. The matte grey painted lupine bot is surprisingly nimble for how solid it looks and Hunter is a rather expert pilot in Richmond’s confines. He’s run more than his share of suppression and sweep missions in the ruins.
He hasn’t said anything in a little bit though he is keeping an eye on ‘Tits’. Just to make sure they don’t get too close.
The convoy is making good time, despite the escort and the precautions they’re taking. Just as the trucks round the bend up front, into a section where there are tall buildings on either side of the road, there’s a whistling sound and the front truck is hit by a missile, sending it flipping in front of the rest.
Then all hell break loose. Sindri’s Ultimax, Tits and Hunters Robots are targetted by fire from the roofs.
Stella’s truck and the second are busy trying to avoid the first truck and Clancy is confronted by gunfire.
The Ultimax II shield flares when it begins to take impacts, but Sindri responds rapidly, his massive laser rifle beginning to return fire. “Sindri, engaging, get the trucks back!” He says, not sure how well these buildings will hold up to heavy MDC weapons..though he does begin to stride forward, Vibro blades engaging, he apparently intends to go -inside- to minimize missile fire hitting him! Which is likely the biggest threat to his bot, right? Hopefully. Is that a Grue?At the first explosion, Clancy and Apanie make a sharp turn — leaping behind the ruins of another building, that are (for the moment), big enough to conceal the Ooroo from direct fire.
Quickly fishing around in his bag of goodies (i.e. herb pouch), he withdraws a tiny vial, pulls out the stopper with his teeth and drinks the contents…
It tastes… vile.
It also makes him disappear. “Bridge,” he whispers into the com-channel. “Apanie’s safe. I’m goin’ in. Don’t contact me or I’ll get my bloomin’ arse shot off. I like this arse.”
IWith that, the invisible Clever Man ducks back out of cover again and runs towards the buildings with the shooters. He is already pulling out his mistletoe amulet to give himself a ‘lift’ upwards…
“Engaging. I have hits.”
“Incoming!” Maddy’s eyes go wide with excitement as missiles and gunfire fills the air. “Oh wow…so pretty.” Tits shudders from nearby impacts and that is enough to wake Maddy from her reverie. “Oh…yeah…I have to shoot back. Mad One engaging!” The rail gun fires and manages to miss…it seems she can’t even hit the side of a barn from ten feet. Or at least the things hiding in it. “Damn it! Sorry, guys.”
Sindri’s shots find their target, leaving a smoking hole in the armour of the individual shooting at him. It stutters for a moment, guns tracking the Ultimax II as it slips into the building. He’ll have a moment of cover but only a moment, the bots guns focus on the walls and open fire … there won’t be much left of that when it’s done.
Clancy’s approach isn’t seen and the armoured individual on the roof manning the gun, keeps focussing on the trucks below, straifing the ground and trying to contain them.
Maddy’s failed shots draw more fire to her, that’s probably not a bad thing as it leaves the trucks alone.
Hunters shots find their mark, slowing the armoured monstrosity in front of him. He should be able to capitalise on that.
As for the trucks, ones on it’s roof and the driver and navigator trying to get out. Stella’s black truck and the last one have slowed as they negotiate the wreckage, but they’re going to try and keep moving.SHIT. It’s times like this that Stella’s long-ingrained reflexes are put to the test, and she manages to avoid running into the lead vehicle of the convoy that just got blasted. Barely. And now they’re at a standstill, which is really bad, but trying to race ahead without their escort would be even more stupid. So really, all she can do is pull a pistol and prepare to defend her truck from anyone that approaches. Damnit.
Sindri returns fire through the wall; what is left, probably wiping it out in the process. The shooter and his weapon are torn apart and reduced to slag, even as Sindri forces his Ultimax II upwards. “I don’t think these buildings will hold up for long..even if we take out the shooters they might collapse.” He radios, so far he hasn’t engaged with the missiles his unit has; to likely to really cause a collapse.
“I think I can, I think I can” Maddy mumbles to herself as she aims at the building once more. “C’mon…just poke your head…” The railgun fires and the blonde rolls her eyes in frustration. “Oh my God. Did you just shoot prematurely! Are you working with me here, Tits?” And then the baddies do pop their heads up…and their guns…and Maddy throws the giant mech into some surprisingly graceful movement to avoid the hail of death. “I’m almost in the zone” she tries to assure her compatriots. With debris falling in showers of dust, smoke, concrete and iron all around him, Clancy takes quite the risk running into the kill-zone in foot — even if he is momentarily invisible.
His mistletoe amulet around his neck, the Aussie rises swiftly up through the air upon the opposite side of one of the buildings, coming to a halt at the top. He can see the shooter (well, the shooter’s rear end), and smirks. Drawing a hand back, he calls his artifact-weapon to his grasp — a seemingly normal boomerang — and throws it at the shooter.
The weapon hits, clobbering the man in the back with the force of a car. The man utters a ‘Wilhelm scream’ as he flies over the edge of the building — in full view of the convoy and their escort. The invisibility wears off, leaving Clancy floating at the edge of the second building, calling his boomerang back to his hand.
“One down,” he tells the convoy over the radio. “You love me, don’cha? C’mon, s’okay ta say it, mates.”
Relying on the link between her optic enhancements and her left hand, she snaps off a shot at the aforementioned raider but doesn’t bother to congratulate herself when the person drops. Instead, she slows a little more by the upsidedown transport and yells to the driver and navigator, “Get in!” They can act as extra fire support for her, and they are NOT getting left behind to die.
Maddy needs to get into the Zone quickly. That mecha is going to press its advantage, even if Tits is shooting prematurely. Maybe Sindri can turn around in time and help her…
Clancy’s boomerang clips the shooter he’s aiming for, knocking their arm and slowing their rate of fire. He won’t have long before they recover and they know where that boomerang came from!
Hunters busy … and will be for a moment.
The trucks keep rolling and Stella’s shot finds it target. The fire straifing the ground stops … at least for the moment. Can she get clear?
Sindri has moved up another level; finding relative ‘cover’ in an area not yet blown apart and begins to track the engagement from his moment of brief respite..and determines Maddy is in trouble, and he begins to open fire again; he doesn’t have the best angle, and he isn’t even sure what model he’s engaging, but it oughta help! Hopefully.Seeing the shooter manage to keep himself from going over the edge, Clancy grumbles and steps down onto the rooftop himself. “Alroight, mate,” says he too the injured man who is already turning his weapon upon the Australian.
“You didn’ think I cam up ‘ere alone didja?” Clancy taunts, and holds up both his forearms before him, hands clenched into fists. “Okay, luvlies,” he whispers, followed by something in his native dialect. The tattoos on his arms — one red, the other gold — of Tasmanian Tigers, flare to life and then fly towards the shooter as he readies his cannon.
The mystical tattoos coalesce into two very large, dog-like animals (each one striped like a tiger) that pounce upon the shooter a mere second before he is able to fire.
What happens next is probably best left to the imagination…
Maddy is all set to blast again with her railgun but then decides that the pigeons flying overhead should live. “Fine…since my targetting whatsits are screwed worse than a brothel at Happy Hour, how about we try this.” Eyes narrow. Teeth grit. And then the giant mech is charging at its opposite, though smaller, number that Sindri just hit. There is a BOOM of impact and then the screeching of twisting metal followed by the crashing thud of it hitting the ground, Tits grinding a heavy foot into its smashed opponent. “And that’s how we roll!” she yells excitedly before adding in a softer tone, “Since we can’t shoot for shit. Okay…who’s next?”It’s an odd thing to see. The Gunwolf’s upper half stays locked on it’s target even as its lower half tists in ways that are rather anotomically improbable, flattening a set of small ruined walls as the wolfen pilot circles. The dual autocannon stay on the taget mech and the ion cannon from the other arm opens up as well, pulsing blue blasts of energy that leave a stench of ozone in their wake.
Hunter knows exactly what he’s targeting too. In a matter of seconds he’s chewed through the torso armor and ruined the heavy gyro keeping the thing upright. Lacking any way to balance itself, the opposing mech slumps and shuts down like a destrung puppet.
And this is the reason the convoy travels with extra protection!
Maddy and Sindri tag team to bring down their one, Clancy’s twins scare the life out of his opponent and Bridges shooting keeps the road ahead of her clear. The driver and navigator of the first truck make a dash for it and jump up into Bridges truck. She’s right to roll and roll she should.
The others shouldn’t dally either. This shipment still needs to get through and their jobs not done till the remaining two trucks are safely in Vesper. While the two people from the downed transport race over and clamber into the truck’s cab, Stella fires off another shot at a raider she sees. She’s not really caring if she misses, so long as she’s keeping them from shooting first. One the crew are in, she guns it and the black truck surges forward to catch up with the rest of the convoy.
Sindri expediates leaving..by slamming through a wall and bounding back down to ground level, taking up a flanking position on the surviving trucks; in case of more trouble! Thank god a building didn’t collapse on any one!The Clever Man runs to the edge of the rooftop beside the placing of the heavy gun formerly used by the shooter. He gives a wave down to the convoy, followed by a shrill whistle.
Apanie emerges from behind a building, then bounds over the ruin to come toward her rider. Clancy grins. “Artillery up ‘ere is… still operable, although its owner… isn’t. I’ll grab the ammo in case you need it. On my way down.”
He turns back to the thylacines, puts the amulet over his neck again and holds up his hands. “Alroight, alroight — you can have a play. Go… bother Bridge. Grasper — if I catch you chewin’ on… anythin’, I’ll let Keeper ‘ave all the juicy kills. Got it?”
The red thylacine hangs his head.
“Okay, mates. Off we go.” And he steps off the building, floating down to his Ooroo who is waiting expectantly for him.
It’s over almost as quickly as it started…which is probably a good thing considering how bad Maddy’s shooting has been. “Mad One checking in. Everyone okay? Thanks for the assistances.” Her voice drops lower as if she is arguing with someone else in the cockpit. “It /so/ is a word. Now hush, I have to see if everyone is okay.” The Titan lurches forward once more to run interference on the starboard side of the convoy. “You alright, BFF? Joey? Other guys.”“I’m fine here. Systems are green. No further contacts on the scope. Resuming patrol.” Hunter’s crisp and businesslike as he falls into line on the left side of the convoy and pans his sights slightly in that direction to keep an eye out. Someone must have really wanted this stuff to risk this kind of firepower to get it.
But it doesn’t matter how dumb they are. He’s still getting paid.
A convoy of important supplies from Dogwood to Vesper comes under attack.
