Brother Devan Read
Russet and White
Devan Read is a monk, a Brother from the Order of Whispers; these are the keepers of secrets on his homeworld, who have made Rifts Earth their home as well. As the Rifts came to his world also, they brought the same kind of strife they have on Earth. They were not merely demons, but twisted elementals, corruptions of the very earth itself (or perhaps manifestations of one of the Old Ones.) Their order was very isolated and younger monks weren't able to leave the Monastery and see much of the outside world(s) and the horrors it contained.
And then Brother Read found a secret -- something horrible, something that caused his other Order to turn on him. Now he is on the run in Rifts Earth, still dedicated to knowledge, learning secrets and keeping them safe -- but he is pursued.
He now finds himself alone (except for the voices of the dead and the winds) in a strange and terrifying new world whose customs, peoples, and places are entirely unfamiliar to him. Just as he is to them, being from a race not previously seen on Rifts Earth.
Strigiian Mystical Monk of the Dead
Devan is or was a member of a monastic order dedicated to watching over the souls of the dead -- the Order of Whispers. They might be considered necromancers by some. Devan is a gifted watcher over Those That Sleep, and is devoted to ensuring the 'Restless Dead', wherever he may find them, are given a chance at that same rest.
Invoke: whenever faced with issues in his area of expertise (necromancy, the afterlife, soul-magic etc), or when the plight of the Restless Dead (or his own need for survival) inspires him to push himself harder, to overcome...
Compel: whenever dealing with those who do not believe in the afterlife, or those who think Devan is an evil necromancer, or when Devan is tempted to abuse his powers over the Dead, or he finds himself in places where there are many Restless Dead (or just one soul, in trouble and crying out), and is thus distracted, or delayed.
Bird on the Run
Devan is doubly pursued -- firstly by members of his own Order. Rumour has it that Devan abused his powers over the Dead (i.e. he went all 'evil necromancer'), although others say he uncovered something he shouldn't have... Then there are the spirits of the Restless Dead (who should be Sleeping) who follow him -- some out of need, for help, and others out of malice (they don't like people who can manipulate them).
Invoke: should he come across people in a similar situation, or should taking one side (i.e. the Dead) over the other (his former brothers and sisters) gain him notoriety and favour with the side chosen.
Compel: whenever someone pursuing him catches up (be they a former brother or sister, or a bounty hunter etc), whenever the Dead prove too distracting or manage to delay him with their own problems, or whenever he is caught talking to spirits that no one else can see, and it either upsets, confuses or offends them.
I See Dead People
This Aspect deals directly with his ability to interact with the Dead.
Invoke: They know he can see them, hear them, *feel* them. Some want to help and some want to harm. But they are always there, and almost never quiet about it. When he must stop to calm, handle, tend, communicate with and or help the restless souls of the dead. When he cannot help them and must fight or forcibly send them to their rest.
Compel: When he's mistaken as a necromancer for his work with spirits. When on rare occasions he mistakes them for the living. When he forgets that others can't see what he does.
Keeper of Secrets
Gathering knowledge from all across the planescape is something personally important to Devan, as well as a duty of his Order; they accumulate the knowledge and secrets of the souls they protect. Devan understands the importance and power of knowledge...and the burden.
Invoke: when presented with opportunities to learn new, potent and often dangerous truths, lies, secrets... whenever surrounded by those who value such knowledge or would benefit from something Devan knows
Compel: when beings come to silence Devan for something he might know, when the temptation to uncover a secret incites Devan to take unnecessary risks, or a deal he has made for knowledge comes back to bite him in the tailfeathers.
